“This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord has commanded, saying: ‘Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring you a red heifer without blemish, in which there is no defect and on which a yoke has never come. You shall give it to Eleazar the priest, that he may take it outside the camp, and it shall be slaughtered before him.” (Numbers 19:2-3 NKJV)

For some time, the Temple Institute in Jerusalem has worked to restore the vessels and vestments of worship for a coming Third Temple. There, gold thread and dyed wool have been woven into priestly garments, the menorah is ready to be lit, and an engraved High Priest crown awaits. However, the most significant deterrent to building a future Temple may surprise you. Rather than quarried stones, woodworkers, or even political will, it is the missing red heifer. How rare is this animal? According to the Mishnah composed in the second century, only nine were sacrificed from when Moses received the command until the Temple was destroyed! (Mishnah Parah, 3.5).[1] Maimonides, the great Jewish theologian, said, “And the tenth will be brought by the king Messiah; may he speedily be revealed. Amen, so may it be G‑d’s will.” (Mishnah Torah, Red Heifer 3.4).[2][3]

All that changed this week when five certified red heifers were brought to Israel via evangelical ranch herders from Texas.[4] Here are five reasons why this is significant, perhaps more than many realize.

1. The ashes of a red heifer are necessary to cleanse from Biblical impurity.

According to the books of Numbers and Hebrews, the ashes of a red heifer mixed with water are necessary to cleanse the physical body from ritual impurity, tumah, especially when caused by exposure to a corpse or even the personal belongings of someone who dies. (Numbers 19:11-15) Since the days of the Second Temple, this sprinkling has not been done, and therefore no person or priest today is qualified to serve. Even if political fights were resolved over building the Sanctuary, a future Temple would only be a museum without those ashes.

2. There has not been a certified red heifer in the last two-thousand years!

For decades, breeding programs have worked to produce this kosher red cow. Unfortunately, each time one was mature enough to be declared acceptable, some defect or aberrant hair color disqualified it. Now there are five!! Has a prophetic timetable opened the door for rebuilding the Temple?

3. The timing at the end of a Shemitah or Sabbatical year in a seven-year cycle may be significant.

At sundown on September 25th, a Jewish New Year, 5783, will begin the cycle anew. I won’t delve too deeply into this, but I believe this may be the most significant seven years since the first century. The appearance of true red heifers, if indeed they are certified, should give us all pause to ask where we are on the prophetic timetable.

4. The red heifer is essential to rebuilding the Temple.

In the States, I am often asked, “How close are we to its construction?” If the seemingly impossible political problems were resolved, a functioning sanctuary could be erected quickly–perhaps in days or weeks! Israel functioned with only a Tabernacle for forty years in the wilderness and almost four hundred years at Shiloh (Judges 18:1). The vestments, silver trumpets, shovels, and even the altar are ready.   The menorah itself is fashioned from 100 pounds of gold! But what about the Ark? The Ark disappeared with the closing days of the First Temple. It was not used in either Zerubbabel’s or Herod’s Temple. Even if its location became known, it is not necessary in order for the ritual service to begin. But now we come to the most crucial point you need to know about the red heifer.

5. The need for a Red Heifer is still valid, but an even greater sacrifice is needed.

I told you what the red heifer could do to cleanse ritual impurity, but there is something that these five, or even fifty red heifers, cannot do. They cannot cleanse a conscience stained by sin. Only the blood of the Messiah can do that!

“For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Hebrews 9:13-14 NKJV).

Examining the Sacrifice

Twice, the writer of Hebrews compared the sacrifice of Yeshua (Jesus) on the Cross to the sacrificial red heifer. If the sprinkled ashes of the spotless heifer can cleanse the body, how much more the blood of the sinless Messiah offered to God cleanse a conscience from dead works.   Over the following days and weeks, leading Rabbinic authorities will examine the five heifers for any defect or discolored hair. I pray they will examine Yeshua, the spotless lamb of God, who takes away the world’s sins even more closely!   Examine His claims, sinless life, prophetic fulfilments, death, and especially His resurrection.

Going Unto Him, Bearing His Shame

“Then a man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and store them outside the camp in a clean place; and they shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for the water of purification; it is for purifying from sin.” (Numbers 19:9 NKJV)

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that just as it was necessary to go to the heifer sacrificed outside the camp for cleansing, we must go to the Messiah. He implores us to go unto Yeshua, who suffered just beyond Jerusalem gates, was killed, and rose again. He is our ultimate source of cleansing and hope.

“For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned outside the camp. Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate. Therefore let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing His reproach. “(Hebrews 13:11-13 NKJV)

These five heifers, the first in two-thousand years, may well be pointing us to the unblemished Son of Man, who was killed outside Jerusalem two thousand years ago and raised to life again. May He come again speedily, and in our days.

“And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.  For I tell you, I will never eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And when He had taken a cup and offered the bracha, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. For I tell you that I will never drink of the fruit of the vine from now on, until the kingdom of God comes.” Luke 22: 15-17 TLV

In June 2009, close to the Upper Room on Mt. Zion, a limestone cup from the time of Yeshua was discovered in a first century mikveh, a ritual immersion pool.  Ten cryptic lines written in Aramaic, along with the sacred name of God, were scratched on its surface.[1]  As far as I know, and I check periodically, those lines have yet to be deciphered.

I have long been fascinated by that find, but it is not the most intriguing cup from the area. The most significant cup from Mt. Zion has been both lost to history, yet with us constantly. I am speaking of the cup which Yeshua used to sanctify the Passover meal with His disciples. When did the cup make its way into the Passover story?  The Passover cup is a late tradition in Judaism.  Alongside the bitter herbs, the lamb and unleavened bread, on that first Passover in Egypt it was not mentioned. By the time of Yeshua, however, the cup had become a means to tell the story of redemption. The Gospels may be the earliest witness to multiple cups at the Passover!

Our next witness to Passover’s cups is found the Mishnah from the Second Century.  It speaks of a minimum of four cups at Passover.[2] The Gospels mention two of the four cups, the “Cup of Blessing” (I Cor. 10: 16), and the “Cup of the New Covenant” (Luke 22: 20). Yeshua’s words, “Drink from it, all of you,” (Mathew 26:27) make this a cup of communion.

An Ancient Practice Continued

In Israel, Jewish believers still keep the Passover, remembering in its four cups not only Yeshua’s death but also Messiah’s promise to come again.

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” I Corinthians 11: 26 TLV

This Passover in Jerusalem I have the honor to lead a unique Seder, which we call the Meal of Messiah, for between 50 and 80 people on the seventh day of Unleavened Bread. But for a moment, we want to focus on the four prophetic cups of the Meal of Messiah.

  1. The Cup of Consecration
  2. The Cup of Commitment
  3. The Cup of the Covenant
  4. The Cup of Messiah’s Coming

What do I mean when I say the first cup is one of consecration? It is called the cup of consecration, the kiddush, for it sets us apart to be holy. Along with the cross, the cup exemplifies what it means to follow Messiah.  By this cup of consecration, we are offered salvation. The cup which He blessed, was passed from individual to individual. Each person was responsible to not only partake, but also preserve its contents for the next person, until that cup could make its way back again to Yeshua.

I have had the joy of drinking from that cup!   Not the exact cup which Yeshua held and passed by hand to John, Peter, and Thomas,  but I have tasted that cup.  Someone passed it to me along my journey, sharing with me the Good News of Yeshua. I have endeavored to also preserve and pass that cup to others.

There is a beautiful picture in Yeshua’s cup for He did not finish its contents. He is yet waiting until all have had a chance to drink. Only then, in the Kingdom of His Father, will He drink of it again.

“For I tell you that I will never drink of the fruit of the vine from now on, until the kingdom of God comes.” Luke 22: 17 TLV

The limestone cup found on Mt. Zion, with its cryptic text, is still waiting to be deciphered, but Yeshua’s cup and invitation to “drink of it, all of you” is to be clearly proclaimed until He comes again.

Tomorrow, I will post about the Cup of Commitment, a better title might be the Cup of Betrothal.  At some point in the First Century, it became common to combine the Passover meal and the betrothal meal into one.  Might there be some connection to Yeshua’s words about going to prepare a place at the Father’s house and the cup of betrothal? Join me as we explore the second cup of Passover.

“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:10-11 NKJV

Today, a blanket of snow fell from heaven upon the city of Jerusalem. Some eight inches of snow! Houses in Israel are mostly concrete, cut stone, and tile floors. They seem to drink in winter. Thankfully we have radiator heaters. I wonder how the ancients weathered their winters in this Holy city. I fully understand the sentiments of one ancient Jerusalemite who rejoiced at the opportunity to shake off winter’s blanket saying,

“For lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; The time of singing has come…” Song of Songs 2:11-12.

Isaiah, speaking under the anointing of God, used snow as a sign of God’s faithfulness, and as a call to repentance. Through snow this morning, the Lord is again speaking to Jerusalem a powerful message.

I. As snow comes down

Snow is not like rain. It is literally liquid gold to a land that is dry for seven months of the year. Heavy rains wash through the Judean hills, filling the wadis and valleys, and reviving ancient riverbeds in torrents to the desert of the Dead Sea. Snow, however, sits as a blanket for days, slowly irrigating and replenishing the water table.

This is the metaphor God used to describe His word. As snow and rain do not return, so He will not take back His Word; It not return void. “It will prosper in the thing for which I sent it”, says the Lord! That is true for our lives as well. Promises which were spoken are not forgotten. They are simply waiting on the right conditions.

II. As Snow brings forth

The region of the Dead Sea wilderness is barren; this snow will bring forth dormant seed! In the last few Springs, Israel’s desert regions came to life with foliage and brilliant flowers not seen in decades. Those seeds had been quietly waiting. I believe the Lord is using this snow to remind Jerusalem that there are dormant seeds, promises, waiting to break forth. This seed will only produce however by the power His sent Word.

III. As Snow Gives Seed to the Sower

“Seed to the sower and bread to the eater”, are the results of snow on the land. Isaiah’s prophecy to Israel is, the harvest is coming. Israel’s calling to sow seed and prophesy to the nations will come to pass again. That promise can only come as we recognize His Messiah, His sent One, Yeshua, whose countenance was like lightning, and His clothing as white as snow.” (Matthew 28:3) His garments white as snow upon our shoulders, soak deep into the soil of our lives, cleansing our sin.

IV. As Snow is White, so Shall You Be

Finally, Isaiah prophesied snow as a sermon for the cleansing of our sin.

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18 NKJV

This snow is Israel’s call to come into agreement with their Creator. “Let us reason together”, He says. As I look out from my balcony, the dark leaves I neglected to rake, which had shriveled into moldering wet clumps are now covered in white.

And so, Jerusalem, this snowstorm is your message from heaven, to reason with the Lord regarding the scarlet stain of our sin. This snowstorm is divine metaphor of what our lives can be if we simply surrender to His will, and receive the atoning blood of the Lamb which cleanses whiter than snow.

Conclusion

As snow causes the earth to break forth in flowers, God’s Word causes us to break forth in song. As snow gives seed and bread, God’s Word fills our mouths with a message of goodness. As snow covers completely, may our sins of scarlet be whiter than wool. We are excited about the snow, but more so about the message of the snow. May the Lord bless you from Zion
