Today is Pentecost Sunday! It is a good time to remember the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Yeshua’s followers. It is a blessed time to celebrate the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of all believers. It is a great time to embrace the wonderful gifts that the Holy Spirit operates in our daily lives. But have you ever stopped to think about the origin of Pentecost? It was a holiday that was celebrated long before the disciples’ Upper Room experience. In the Bible it is called the Feast of Weeks that occurred fifty days after Passover. And it commemorated the time that God Himself came down on Mount Sinai to meet with His people and to give them a special gift—His covenant of promise to the people He was calling unto Himself as a special possession.

We are all familiar with that first covenant that God made with the Israelites at Mount Sinai. It was there that they received the Ten Commandments and the Law. But did you know that God made a second covenant with His people before they entered the Promised Land? It is found in Deuteronomy 29. Verse one begins,

“These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb (Sinai)…” This covenant was for the children of those who stood before God at Sinai, but not only for them! Verse 10 says, “All of you stand today before the LORD your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel, your little ones and your wives–also the stranger who is in your camp…that you may enter into covenant with the LORD your God, and into His oath, which the LORD your God makes with you today.”

But He didn’t stop there; God went on to say,

“I make this covenant and this oath, not with you alone, but with him who stands here with us today…as well as with him who is not here with us today…”

God included even the future generations who would rise up and foreigners who would come from a far land (verse 22) as part of this covenant! That includes YOU!

And what did this covenant entail? What was God agreeing with them to do? One promise on God’s part in verse 13 was, “that He may establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you…” And the obligation of the people in verse 18 was, so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God, to go and serve god’s of these nations, and that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood (like jealousy or resentment that eats you up from the inside out).

That’s it (but that’s plenty!). It is simple. God wants us all to be His own people. He doesn’t want us to become distracted by the idols that this world entices us with so that we gradually turn our back on Him. And he doesn’t want us to have a root of bitterness or wormwood toward our fellow men. In other words, God wants us to love Him and love each other. Yeshua said that all the law hangs on these two commands (Matthew 22:40).

So, I leave you today with a final word of encouragement from 1 John 4:10-11,

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

May you feel God’s deep and abiding love wash over you today and spill out on all those around you! And may your souls be refreshed and revived by the renewed infilling of His Holy Spirit in your heart as you accept God’s second precious gift of Pentecost. Happy Pentecost Sunday!

This week is the commemoration of Jerusalem Day, a holiday remembering the reunification of the city of Jerusalem and establishment of Jewish control over the Old City in the war of 1967. The capital of Israel will erupt with jubilant celebrations, parades and chanting marchers in the streets. The Old City will be especially boisterous as throngs of patriotic youth groups will dance and sing and cheer their Jewish heritage within the ancient walls. But with all this revelry, there also comes a bittersweet note of the reality of the times we live in. There is still war in Gaza and almost daily missiles incoming from Yemen. There are still hostages held captive, whose families protest the government’s lack of success in attaining their release. There is corruption and dissention among the government offices, and antisemitism is wreaking tragic events worldwide. And so many are wondering where the answers to these conflicts can be found.

These days resound very similarly to the times of another kingdom, that of King Josiah. Josiah fought to repel the idolatry of Judah’s past monarchies and return prosperity and dedication to the Lord back to the land. Yet, even with all his efforts there was still an undercurrent of corruption that permeated the culture, a rebellious and wicked cancer that would lead to Judah’s captivity and the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonians. Many then, as now, were grappling for answers. And the Lord in His great mercy, wanting the people to turn back to Him in repentance continued sending His prophets with the answers, if only the people would listen.

Zephaniah was a succinct yet powerful prophet in the days of King Josiah of Judah. His prophecy cut to the very core of what was happening amid the nation and also looked forward to a time when God would infuse Himself in the midst of His people. We see a three-fold solution in the prophetic call of Josiah’s day that would also be so applicable today if only the words would be heeded.

In the Midst of Jerusalem…

Zephaniah called out the corruption and wickedness that was prevalent in the midst of God’s holy city, Jerusalem. “Her princes in her midst are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves…her prophets are insolent, treacherous people; her priests have polluted the sanctuary…” (Zephaniah 3:3-4) Yet, in the midst of all this corruption, God had still not abandoned His people. He was there, ever-present, calling His people to righteousness,

“The LORD is righteous in her midst, He will do no unrighteousness. Morning by morning He brings His justice to light; He never fails, but the unjust knows no shame.” (Zephaniah 3:5)

God in the Midst of His People

And what happens when a holy and just God stands in the midst of an evil and proud generation? The two cannot co-exist. His righteousness prevails over evil every time. His love and patience never fails! His pure holiness will repel those who do not bow to His authority and those who remain will be transformed into new creatures.

“In that day you shall not be shamed for any of your deeds in which you transgress against Me; for then I will take away from your midst those who rejoice in your pride, and you shall no longer be haughty in My holy mountain. I will leave in your midst a meek and humble people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD…and no one shall make them afraid.” (Zephaniah 3:11-13)

God’s People in His Midst

And what will the Lord do with those who remain, who are cleansed of their sins and humble in His presence? He will turn to them and take them in His arms and comfort them. He will calm their fears and fill them with joy.

“The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)

Where do you stand in this message? Are you repelled by the holiness and purity of the Lord? Or are you being transformed in His presence into a new creature? Are you humble before Him and trusting in His name? You do not need to be afraid of the hand of the Lord at work in you. He will make you fearless in the face of the corruption of this world. And the Lord Himself will sing and dance and rejoice over you like those who will be rejoicing over Jerusalem this week. Our prayer is that all—Jews, Arabs and all peoples of the world–will come to a knowledge of this grace and free salvation that is offered as an answer to all of life’s struggles. May the Lord take you up in His loving arms today and comfort you with His love. And may you hear the voice of the Lord Himself singing over you with joy.

So many times I have heard secular atheists say, “Religion is a crutch for weak people.” This insult is meant to imply that people turn to religion to help them get through the difficulties of life because they are looking for an easy salve to help them deal with their problems. Well, I wholeheartedly agree! Life is hard. We live in a dark world with a lot of evil around us. I know that I am weak and frail and prone to fail again and again no matter how hard I try to make it on my own. Not one person is able to make it on their own. We absolutely need Someone to lean on who will support us in our trials, who will encourage us in our faith, who will help us overcome the temptations of the enemy. We need a Friend who will bind up our wounded souls and coat us with the balm of His presence so we can stand firm in the midst of a crooked and dark generation. We need an Advocate who will guide us in the right paths and pick us up when we fall and defend us before the Judge when we stand accused. We need a Mighty Warrior who will cloth us with His armor and set our feet on a firm foundation so we can withstand the onslaught of the devil’s fiery darts. That Someone is our Lord Yeshua! He is our strong crutch helping us in this life. I love how The Living Bible describes the Lord as our supportive crutch in Philippians 2:12-15:

“Dearest friends, when I was there with you, you were always so careful to follow my instructions. And now that I am away you must be even more careful to do the good things that result from being saved, obeying God with deep reverence, shrinking back from all that might displease Him. For God is at work in you, helping you want to obey Him, and then helping you do what He wants.

Any person who has ever sprained an ankle or broken a leg is pitiful trying to walk. They are weak and cry in pain until they are offered a crutch. That crutch gives them the strength to stand upright and returns their mobility. They are happy to have a crutch to lean on. Can you imagine all the unsaved people of the world trying to hobble through their miserable lives and endure continual agony without a crutch to lean on? Sadly, this is the true case for many people. They don’t even realize that they need help. They are as Revelation 3:17-18 describes, “Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ [no crutch]—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked—I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.”

Have you ever been in a dark room when the electricity went off and could not see your hand in front of your face? That is how people who think that ‘religion is a crutch for the weak’ are and they don’t even know it. They are groping around in the darkness of this evil world, searching for some source of light to help them find their way. And if you light a single match in that dark room, all eyes are immediately drawn to that tiny light and are filled with joy to be able to see it. Let’s continue reading in Philippians 2:14-15.

“In everything you do, stay away from complaining and arguing so that no one can speak a word of blame against you. You are to live clean, innocent lives as children of God in a dark world full of people who are crooked and stubborn. Shine out among them like beacon lights…”

With the Lord Yeshua as your Helper (crutch), supporting you in doing His will, you can be more than a tiny, flickering flame of a lit match. You can shine brightly like a lighthouse in the night. Your testimony will draw the eyes of those around you to see the True Light, the source of hope that will bring joy to the hearts of those who turn to Him. “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6 NKJV)

So, be encouraged as you embrace your crutch of faith in your daily walk with the Lord. And “let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” today. (Matthew 5:16)

“Make the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple, and scarlet yarn.” Exodus 26:1
The colors mentioned throughout the Bible span a spectrum from earthy rust to regal blue. Notably, the colors chosen for the Tabernacle’s curtains were among the most costly and precious.

The Source of Colors

Common colors in ancient times were derived from natural sources: yellow from yarn dipped in boiled onion leaves, rust from pomegranates, green from fig leaves, and tan from walnuts. However, the Tabernacle’s curtains featured hues obtained from the Murex trunculus snail. When crushed and exposed to the Mediterranean sun, this snail produced a rich blend of inky blues and reds. Perhaps these were the same colors woven into Joseph’s robe, which so provoked his brothers.

The Value and Permanence of Colors

Why were these colors so expensive? The exorbitant cost was partly due to the vast quantities of snails required and the labor-intensive process involved. Additionally, these colors were known for their remarkable durability. I have personally observed ancient garments, thousands of years old, still retaining their vibrant blue dyes. This enduring quality is why the Bible uses the comparison of sin to the permanent dye, scarlet.
Sin and Redemption
“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18
Like sin, scarlet was costly and difficult to remove. Many attempt to rid themselves of sin’s stain through therapy, medication, name changes, or even relocation. Yet, there is hope: the Lord offers a solution for sin’s scarlet stain—atonement through the blood of Yeshua.

Reasoning with the Lord

The path to removing the stain of sin begins by reasoning with the Lord. The Hebrew word for “reason” suggests a serious, perhaps intense, discussion until agreement is reached. It may seem unusual to think we need to reason with the Lord, but removing sin requires active participation on our part. We ‘reason’ with the Lord by aligning ourselves with His perspective on our sin. Acknowledging, confessing, and turning away from our sin is the only way to cleanse our scarlet stains.

This week is Mother’s Day, a good time to honor not just our mothers but all the women who pour into our lives—from friends to ministers to colleagues to lunchroom ladies to cleaning ladies and more. Most women have found a special niche to fill in the lives of those closest to them and have nurtured a sphere of influence that they can touch in the people around them. I can already hear some of the accolades that will be lauded on these ladies, “World’s Greatest Mom”, “Woman of the Year”, “Sweetheart”, “Virtuous Woman”, on and on.

I wonder if mothers were honored in Bible days. Just because women are not mentioned extensively in the Scriptures doesn’t mean that they were not a valued part of society in Bible times. And when they were referenced, it was usually for a significant and meaningful reason. Many women from biblical times until now live as unsung heroes, unrecognized by men, but held in high esteem in the eyes of the Lord.

If Paul were to mention you in one of his epistles, what would he have to say about you? He had good things to say about many of his fellow believers in Romans 16:3-16. Here are some of my favorites:

“Greet Mary, who labored much for us…”

Are you laboring much for the cause of Yeshua?

“Greet Apelles, approved in Christ…”

This is what I would like to hear said about me—that God approves of me.

“Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine…”

How powerful, to be chosen by God! And his mother was a mother to more than just her own family. She nurtured many in the family of God, including Paul. Are you a mother like that?

“Greet those who are of the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord…”

This implies that perhaps not all in Narcissus’ family were in the Lord (were believers). Maybe that is the case in your family too. But he was working on them because he had some in his household who were followers of Christ. Don’t give up! Keep working on those family members who are not yet in the Lord. The Lord will honor you for your efforts just as Paul honored Narcissus for his influence.

And finally,

“Greet Amplias, my beloved in the Lord…”

Yes, you are beloved by God! And the closer you draw to Him the stronger He loves you.

Maybe some of these platitudes seem too high and lofty to reach, but don’t let the devil tell you that you are unworthy of honor. As a son or daughter of the Great King Yeshua, you are deserving of all the blessings in Heaven that the Lord has to bestow on you.  And the highest accolade He can give you is to say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant…” No matter what kind of woman or mother (or father) you are, sung or unsung, I pray you will have a day filled with God’s love and approval and favor in all you do for Him.

May is a beautiful month with much to celebrate—May Day celebrates Spring bursting forth in glorious colors of flora and fauna, Mother’s Day honors women’s roles in the family, Memorial Day remembers the sacrifices and service of many military personnel, and even Cinco de Mayo (5th of May), a colorful Mexican holiday that is becoming known in the United States, celebrates triumph over one’s enemies. But I would like to suggest another holiday that we should celebrate not just in May but all year long, a celebration that was instituted even in Moses’ day—the wonderful blessings of reading the Word of God! Maybe we could call this “Life in God’s Word Day”.

How many of us have multiple copies of the Bible laying around our homes? And how many of those copies are on a shelf or in a drawer collecting dust? Do you have a special copy that you read from or make notes in? Grab one of those volumes and open with me to a beautiful passage that celebrates the promises of God. In Deuteronomy 17:18-20, Moses instructed the Israelites that when they one day would ask for a king,

“…when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites. And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes, that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel.”

I see in this verse at least five promised blessings for the one who reads their Bible all the days of their life and does what it says:
1) It will teach you to fear the Lord.
2) It will keep your heart humble.
3) It will keep you from straying away from God and His calling for your life.
4) It will help you enjoy a long life.
5) It will give your family a godly heritage to pass down from generation to generation.

This was such an important command that Moses even instituted a national holiday of Bible reading later in Deuteronomy 31:10-13:

“And Moses commanded them saying, ‘At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of release, at the Feast of Tabernacles…you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing…that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the LORD your God and carefully observe all the words of this law, and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God…'”

If you are not in the habit of reading your copies of the Bible every day, pick one up and dust it off! There is so much you can glean from even a few verses each day. It will make you wise to salvation and will help light your path that God is leading you down.
Dig into God’s Word today, there are amazing nuggets just waiting to be discovered. And perhaps, as you celebrate God’s promises, you can pass along one of your extra copies of the Bible to encourage someone else to discover the life-giving blessings in God’s Word too.

P.S. And if you aren’t sure where to start or how to develop a Bible-reading habit, check out our Bible-reading guides available on this website under the Bible Reading Plan Tab. We have a variety of formats to choose from for a daily and yearly program of celebrating God’s Word.

In the Negev desert of southern Israel there stands a high, solar powered tower like a lighthouse in a sea of sand that is illuminated all day by the sunlight being reflected on it from thousands of mirrors on the ground. This dazzling light can be seen for miles. Many people have referred to it as the “Eye of Sauron” from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The mirrors below it are oriented to continually angle the sunlight from the earliest beams of the dawn to the diminishing rays of dusk. And this Ashalim Power Station can produce enough renewable green electricity to power tens of thousands of homes.

When Moses received the Commandments of God, written on tablets of stone by the finger of God Himself, he brought them down the mountain and his face shone with the glory of the LORD. But Moses put a veil over his face, not to keep the people from staring at his radiating face, but to prevent the people from seeing the glory fading away (see 2 Cor. 3:13). We have also been given an even more glorious message from God that He wants us to deliver with unveiled faces so those around us can see His glory.

“Clearly you are an epistle of Christ…written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart. And we have such trust through Christ toward God…who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant…Therefore since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech…But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 3 (excerpts)

We are called to be Son-powered lighthouses, like mirrors that reflect the glory and love of Yeshua to the world. And in the process, we too are transformed to be like Him. Don’t cover up your mirror with a veil like Moses did. Don’t let your mirror get clouded or smudged with sin. Shine for Yeshua today! Spread His light around to this dark world! Boldly speak about the hope that is in you! Your life, reflecting Christ, may be the only Gospel some people will read. Some people may cover their eyes and shield their face from His light reflecting off you, but others will look toward that light and be drawn to see more. Don’t be surprised when they ask you why you are different, why you glow, why you can love, and how they can learn to do the same. God loves you and has called you to be an instrument He can use to reach the lost, for He loves them too, even in their pitiful, wretched state, and wants them to know the liberty and salvation He offers. Realign your heart and spirit with God’s so He can reflect His love brighter through you today.

Hallelujah! For the Lord is risen! Yes, He is risen indeed! As we celebrate Resurrection Sunday, I would like to introduce you to three groups of eyewitnesses to the Lord’s resurrection.

“Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it…And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. But the angel answered and said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said…And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead…’ So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.” (Matthew 28:1-8)

“Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened… they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, ‘Tell them, “His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.”’ …So they took the money and did as they were instructed…” (Matthew 28:11-15)

The very first eyewitnesses of the Lord’s resurrection were the soldiers who were standing guard at the tomb. They felt with their own legs the ground quaking beneath their feet. They saw with their own eyes the angel in shining clothes roll the stone away from the tomb. They shook with great fear to see the Lord emerging from the grave and fainted dead away. They, of all people, had no excuse to not believe, yet they publicly denied the Lord’s resurrection.

The next eyewitnesses were the women who came to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices they prepared. They did not actually see His resurrection, but they did see the angel and the empty tomb and believed with joy and awe. And as they turned to go, they saw the Lord and clung to Him and worshipped Him. They had no trouble believing in His resurrection power.

The third witnesses, the Lord’s eleven disciples, did not see the angel or the Lord (at first), but saw only the evidence that something amazing had happened–the empty tomb and the folded grave clothes. They couldn’t believe the stories of the women and the disciples from Emmaus who met Jesus on their way. But in faith and hope they went to the mountain in the Galilee where Jesus said He would meet them. And when He later appeared to them there, some believed and worshiped Him, yet some still doubted. Thomas, one of the doubters, was convinced only after seeing the wounds of the Lord in His flesh.

“Jesus said to him, ‘Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’” (John 20:29)

Every person stands among each of these three groups of witnesses at some time in their life. Where do you find yourself right now? Are you like one of the soldiers? Have you heard the Gospel and felt the tug of the Holy Spirit’s call, yet deny the resurrection and salvation power of the Lord? I pray not! But you may know someone who is in this position. There are many in this group who need to be taken by the hand and led into a saving faith and knowledge of the Lord Jesus, our Savior.

Are you seeking the Lord in faith and hope like the disciples, yet still have some doubts in your heart that you are saved? You can know for sure today! Believe and do not doubt! Begin to confess your faith and ask the Lord to confirm His grace in your heart. You can pray, “Yes, Lord, I believe, please help my unbelief.” And He will absolutely come and show you without a doubt that He is your faithful and true Lord and Savior.
Or have you believed with all your heart that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God, and that He died and rose again to make a way for you to be saved, even though you have not seen Him yet? You are blessed, as I am sure you already know, to be standing in this group of the Lord’s witnesses. But you have also been given a great commission to go and tell others the great news you have received. Compel those who are like the soldiers to step out of the group of denial and introduce them to the Lord. And come alongside those who are like the doubting disciples, and share with them the goodness and true relationship you have experienced in your walk with the Son of Man. For when the disciples did believe, they were each changed from uneducated fishermen into powerful witnesses that “turned the world upside down”.

May you be encouraged in your walk with Yeshua today and may His saving power strengthen your spirit as you witness to others for Him.

I would like to show you a picture today of two evangelists who were called in the same place to reach the same people and how their stories can be a rich lesson for us today. Both were living in very sinful cities in the same geographical region. Both received an urgent ultimatum from God who was about to completely destroy their hometowns because the evil of the people had become as a stench in His nostrils. And both were given the same task of reaching their immediate family with a salvation message.

The first preacher was Lot, who had settled among the people of Sodom. He had several sons and daughters, some of whom had married men from the city. Two angels from God came to Lot and warned him of the imminent destruction and compelled him to action. “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—take them out of this place!” (Genesis 19:12)

When God tries to teach us a concept, sometimes an example of what not to do can be as powerful as what we should do. Second Peter 2:6-8 shows us this powerful non-example,

“…and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds).”

Lot did go to his family to warn them of the coming wrath, “So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, ‘Get up, get out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city!’ But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.” Lot was unsure, even hesitant to lead his family out. Perhaps he didn’t believe that God would actually do what He said. Or maybe he felt that God would be merciful and relent from the doom He had pronounced. But when the final moment came, the angels even had to grab Lot himself by the hand to lead just him, his wife and two daughters out of the town to safety.

The next preacher was Rahab. She was a harlot in the city of Jericho just a few miles from where Sodom and Gomorrah had been destroyed. She, too, was visited by two men who warned her of the LORD’s command to destroy her hometown. And the men said to her, “We will be blameless…unless you bring your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household to your own home…And whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him.” (Joshua 2:17-19) She, like Lot, also went through the city, compelling her immediate family to gather in a place of safety from the battle to come. And when the final moment came, what was her result? How convincing was her message to her family?

“And the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. So they brought out all her relatives and left them outside the camp of Israel.” (Joshua 6:23)

Rahab believed God’s promises and did not doubt that He would do what He had sworn. She declared to the two spies, “for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” (Joshua 2:11) And she had declared this message fervently to all her relatives, bringing them to the place of salvation.
God has called each one of us to be evangelists and preachers. We don’t have to go to remote foreign lands or stand behind a pulpit to be obedient to His call. For our first and highest priority is to reach those of our own families. We are to compel them to come to a place of safety to preserve their souls from His final judgment on sin. Yeshua has provided that safe haven for us and our families. Only through Him can we and our loved ones be saved.
What kind of evangelist have you been to your family? Have you been like Lot, making only a half-hearted attempt, hesitating to offend those who might reject your message? Or have you been taking your family by the hand and drawing them into your home to hear and watch and pray for the salvation of God? Psalm 78:5-7 reminds us of the importance of reaching our own families with the Gospel,

“For He established a testimony in Jacob…which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; that the generation to come might know them…that they may set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.”

Be encouraged! There is hope for your family. God loves you and each one of your family and desperately yearns for them to be with Him one day. Don’t give up on them, even if they seem far from the Lord in their lives! Share the Gospel with them. Teach them around your dinner table about the goodness of the Lord. Compel them to come to church with you. Declare His Word to them that they may soon set their hope in God too.

And I took my staff, Beauty, and cut it in two, that I might break the covenant which I had made with all the peoples. So it was broken on that day. Thus the poor of the flock, who were watching me, knew that it was the word of the Lord. Then I said to them, “If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.” Zechariah 11:10-12 NKJV

Why did you break your staff? The elders were unnerved seeing the magnificent shepherd’s rod, “Beauty,” now shattered before them. Without hesitation, the shepherd called for his wages. Conferring angrily, they gave him thirty pieces of silver!? “This is my ‘magnificent’ pay for all I have done? Cast it to the potter in the house of the Lord”, he said. And just as dramatically, he broke his other staff, the one he called “Bonds,” saying, “The unity between Judah and Israel is gone!”

What does this prophecy in the book of Zechariah truly reveal about Yeshua’s betrayal for thirty pieces of silver and His body being broken for us during Passover? This prophetic story in Zechariah, with its shattered staves, Beauty, and Bonds, foreshadowed Yeshua’s betrayal. But more than that, His broken body was the instrument to bring salvation to all people who will repent and follow Him.

As we approach this time of the year when we remember the Last Supper, we are reminded of his betrayal. The ancient words that preface our taking communion begin with, “On the same night in which He was betrayed (He) took bread.” (I Cor. 11:23)

How shocking that this word, betrayed, is appended to the Lord’s Supper – the very symbol of our salvation. We live in a time when people are abandoning the One who gave Himself for them and deconstructing their faith for far less than thirty silver coins. Yeshua spoke of His impending betrayal seven times in Mathew’s Gospel. I want to focus on three instances especially – betrayed into the hands of men, betrayed to the elders of Israel, and finally betrayed into the hands of sinners. Each of these placed a value on the Master. “What is Yeshua worth to you?”

I. Betrayed into the Hands of the Nations

“Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” Mat. 17:22 NKJV

The dramatic episode in the book of Zechariah was fulfilled in the rejection of Yeshua, the Great Shepherd. Zechariah’s dramatic shepherd with the two staves, Beauty, and Bonds was a picture of the Lord shepherding rebellious sheep. Holding His glorious staff for all to see, he cut it before the people – in Hebrew, literally “chopping” it down.

Shepherds often carried two implements – a rod and a staff. With the rod, the shepherd defended his sheep from predators, and He guided them with his staff. The staff called “Beautiful” was symbolic of God’s covenant with “all peoples.” Some commentaries argue that “Beautiful” was the rod that kept the nations from attacking the people of Israel. The breaking of “Beauty” removed Israel’s protection, ultimately allowing the Romans to destroy Jerusalem and the Holy Temple.

This staff also represented God’s covenant (brit) with the nations, perhaps even the same covenant “cut” with Noah and his descendants after the flood. Though there will never again be a flood of water to cover the earth, with the breaking of Beauty, there is now an expectation of consuming fire and judgment. The nations will be held accountable.

The Beautiful Broken Staff and the Messiah

But I see another parallel. The breaking of beauty is a picture of Yeshua’s rejection and crucifixion. As the season approached that final Passover, Yeshua said, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” Just as the shepherd’s rod, “Beauty,” was broken, so Yeshua was given into the hands of the nations to be killed. The Hebrew word for beauty, Noam, means pleasant. Yet, no more beautiful and pleasant gift has ever been given than Yeshua. His betrayal into the hands of the nations to be “cut off” was God’s means to save all people. In these end times, the nations must again decide what to do with Yeshua – bow before Him or rebel? When He returns, He will not be broken; He will rule the nations with a “rod of Iron.”

Now, we look to Yeshua’s betrayal by the Chief Priests and the breaking of the second staff, called Bonds.

II. Betrayed into the hands of Scribes and Chief Priests

“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death.” Mat. 20:18 NKJV

The Shepherd’s second staff in Zechariah’s prophecy was called Bonds, symbolizing the unity between Judah and Israel. Just before it was broken, the Shepherd asked the elders for His wages of separation. Conferring together, they gave a minimal price of thirty pieces of silver.

“Then I said to them, “If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord for the potter. Then I cut in two my other staff, Bonds, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.” Zech. 11:12-14 NKJV

Those same words were repeated as Judas, one of the twelve, went to the chief priest, saying, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.” Mat. 26:14-16 NKJV

Judas tailored his words to the sensitivities of those who opposed Yeshua, not even mentioning the Master by name. As one commentary noted, “When they spake of him, (they) usually said, “he,” or “that man,” or “this fellow.” And in the same rude way Judas now treats his master.” [1]

Judas’ betrayal began with compromise and theft from the treasury. It finally manifested into a bitter heart, callous even in how he offered the Lord up. We are now witnessing a great falling away. Some who once walked with the Lord are cold, while others have completely walked away. If you ever wonder where one stands with the Lord, listen closely to how they speak of Yeshua. Like Judas, their words will betray them.

Thirty Shekels for the Potter

As the shepherd in Zechariah was given the paltry pay of thirty silver coins, the minimum compensation for a servant accidentally killed (Exodus 21:32), so the chief priests agreed on the same price for Yeshua. Judas, for his part, was prepared to take any offer. And though he was conscience-stricken seeing the results of his betrayal, even the way he returned the money fulfilled Zechariah’s words. Casting the money into the House of the Lord, the priest refused to return it to the treasury and instead purchased a burial ground at the potter’s field. (Mat. 27:6-10). We all must answer the question, “How much do you and I value the Lord”? Is He beyond any price?

Now, let us examine a final betrayal statement of Yeshua – betrayal into the hands of sinners.

III. Betrayed into the Hands of Sinners

“Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.” Mat. 26:45 NKJV

Yeshua was betrayed into the hands of the nations, to the elders of Israel, and finally into the hands of sinners. Pilot’s wife begged her husband to have nothing to do with Yeshua. The Roman soldiers made sport, dressing him in royal robes and placing a crown of thorns on His head. And two thieves crucified Yeshua’s right and left also had to choose. One mocked Him, but the other pleaded, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” All have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and therefore, all must decide, “What will I do with Yeshua?”

Lord, Is it I?

On the night that Yeshua was betrayed, Matthew recorded these words:

“When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve. Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, “Lord, is it I?” Matthew 26:20-22 NKJV

Each disciple mournfully looked inward and asked, “Lord, is it I?” Even Judas turned and asked the question. Nobody that night suspected Judas.

“Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?” He said to him, “You have said it.” Mat. 26:25 NKJV

The good news is that the Messiah came to call sinners to repent. And so, Yeshua was betrayed into the hands of all sinners for them to decide. The two thieves were condemned to die with Yeshua, and each had to decide. The Roman soldier at the foot of Yeshua had to decide. Each one of us must decide.

A Love Worth Ten Times More

I began asking what value you would place on the Lord. Something unusual happened on the night that Judas betrayed the Lord for thirty pieces of silver. A young woman, Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, came into the banqueting hall in Bethany carrying an alabaster jar. As it was cracked open, the spikenard’s overwhelming fragrance flooded the room. With extravagance, she poured the ointment upon the head of the Lord. Judas indignantly exclaimed, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” Mark 14:4b-5 NKJV

This was lavish; excessive love poured out. For Mary, no amount was too high for her devotion to the Savior. For Judas, no price was too low to betray Him! While Mary spent more than THREE HUNDRED silver denarii, Judas settled for just thirty! Her extravagance was ten times more valuable than the price for which Judas agreed to betray His Lord. As we approach the season of Good Friday and remember the resurrection, let us renew our love and commitment to the Good Shepherd, broken, betrayed, and victoriously raised to life. He is worth far more than we can ever give or receive.
